Issue

The Army Training Command has signed MoU with Rashtriya Raksha University to develop ‘Wargame Research and Development Centre’ known as ‘WARDEC’.

Background

It will be India’s first-of-kind simulation-based training centre, which will be using artificial intelligence (AI) to design virtual reality wargames.

Details

  • The army will use Wargame Research and Development Centre to train its soldiers and test their strategies.

  • The wargame model will be used to prepare for wars as well as counter-terror and counter-insurgency operations.

Location

The centre will be set up in a military zone in New Delhi and will collaborate with Tech Mahindra to develop the centre in the coming three to four months.

Features

  • The skills of the soldiers will be enhanced in metaverse where their surroundings will be simulated using a combination of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

  • The game would be in form of player versus player, player versus computer or even computer versus computer.

Use of simulated wargames

  • BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB, apart from Indian army, can also use the metaverse-enabled games for better simulation.

  • Armies of US, Israel, and UK make use of such simulated wargames to prepare for military conflict.

Benefits for the army

  • It will help Indian army to use the wargame centre to train its officers in military strategies.

  • It will help army officials to train for all possible scenarios that can occur in a war-zone.

Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU)

  • The RRU comes under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and is located in Gandhinagar.

  • It has been declared an “institute of national importance” and specializes in national security and policing.
