Varuna 2019: India, France Naval exercise begins

The first part of the Indo-French joint naval exercise, Varuna 19.1 will be conducted off Goa coast from 1 to 10th May, 2019. This year it is 17th edition of this bilateral naval exercise held between both countries.  The second part, Varuna 19.2, is scheduled to be held in Djibouti at the end of May 2019.

Varuna 19.1

  • It will be conducted in two phases viz. harbour phase at Goa and sea phase. Harbour phase will include cross-visits, professional interactions and discussions and sports events. The sea phase will comprise various excercises across the spectrum of maritime operations.
  • French Navy will be represented by aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle, two destroyers, FNS Forbin and FNS Provence, frigate FNS Latouche-Treville, the tanker FNS Marne and nuclear submarine.
  • Indian Navy will be represented by aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, destroyer INS Mumbai, Teg-class frigate, INS Tarkash, Shishumar- class submarine, INS Shankul, andDeepak- class fleet tanker, INS Deepak.


The bilateral naval exercise between India and France was initiated in 1983 and christened as Varuna in 2001. This exercise forms vital part of Indo-French strategic partnership. Since its inception, it has grown in scope and complexity over the years.

This exercise also exemplifies strong relations between two countries, in line with tJoint Strategic Vision of India-French Cooperation in Indian Ocean Region (IOR) signed by President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the former’s State visit to India in March 2018.

This exercise aims at developing interoperability between navies of both countries and fostering mutual cooperation by learning from each other’s best practices to conduct joint operations. It also underscores shared interests and commitment of both nations in promoting maritime security.
