Yameen’s acquittal

Date: 20 December 2021 Tags: India & World

Money laundering conviction against former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was overturned by the Supreme Court of Maldives.

Abdulla Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering in 2019 for taking $1M from a private firm meant for the government.

  • The decision will not only have implications on Presidential and Parliamentary polls but also on India-Maldives relations.

  • Yameen’s party has been giving official statements by using ‘India Out’ phrase. This comes after the leader was let off by the court.

Yameen’s rule

  • Abdulla Yameen served as the President for five years before getting defeated by Ibrahim Solih in 2018 Presidential polls.

  • Yameen had hardliner approach and openly built relations with Saudi Arabia and China. This started a geopolitical battle between India and China.

  • Yameen has been accused of infringing on human rights, the suppression of dissent, controlling freedom of speech and expression and other violations of the Human Rights.

Maldivian politics

  • The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is suffering from internal rift. There are concerns on its performance because Solih had managed to win as a coalition candidate.

  • There is also a rift between Ibrahim Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed regarding replacing Presidential system with Parliamentary system.

  • Solih has not made any open statements but Nasheed has been asking Solih to reign in religious extremism, days after surviving an attack.

  • The disagreements have come out in open. If the same case persists, the performance of the party will be affected in upcoming elections.

Yameen’s rise

  • If Yameen manages to come back to power again, it will be a concern for New Delhi. However, the relations will not be drastically affected.

  • Even during previous term, Yameen had managed to build people-to-people connection between India and Maldives. It will be inappropriate for him to make sudden changes.
