Date: 10 November 2021 Tags: India & World

India is set to host the ‘Delhi Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan’ on November 10th and 11th in New Delhi.

The meeting will be hosted at the level of National Security Advisors (NSAs). It will be chaired by NSA Ajit Doval.

  • The meeting will be regarding the security situation in Afghanistan, which is very paramount for New Delhi.

  • The meeting will include regional stakeholders and important powers, which will assess current situation and the future outlook.

  • The National Security Council Secretariat is in charge of organising the in-person meeting.

  • Invites have been sent to neighbouring countries of Afghanistan such as Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan along with stakeholders such as China and Russia.

Presence of Pakistan

  • The NSA of Pakistan, Moeed Yusuf has refused to attend the meet to protest India’s alleged ‘negative’ role in Afghanistan.

  • India says that Pakistan’s refusal to attend the meet displays its mischievous position in Afghanistan. It shows the negative influence of Pakistan on Afghanistan.

  • Countries such as Iran, Russia and many central Asian nations have confirmed their participation.

  • This is the first time that all Central Asian countries and not just immediate neighbours of Afghanistan will be attending.

Aim of the meeting

  • The meeting is seen as an attempt by India to secure a seat for itself at the high table responsible for taking decisions in Afghanistan.

  • The government has not officially engaged with Taliban through formal channels. The role of ISI in Taliban cabinet formation has further strengthened the doubts.

  • New Delhi has expressed concern regarding situation in Afghanistan where there are clear indications of misuse of their soil for anti-India activities.

Earlier meeting

The earlier phases of the meet were held in Iran in September 2018 and December 2019. The third edition in India could not be held earlier due to pandemic.
