Kashi Vishwanath corridor

Date: 14 December 2021 Tags: Holy Places

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Kashi Vishwanath corridor that connects the Vishwanath temple with the Ganga ghat.

The aim of the project is to decongest the area surrounding the temple and also modify the temple complex.

  • The Prime Minister had launched the Rs 800 crore project in his home constituency in March 2019. It will restore the lost glory of the city.

  • The project is envisioned to provide better facilities to the devotees visiting the holy temple and allow them seamless access to the ghats.

  • The corridor will be 20 ft long and will connect Mandir Chowk on the temple premises with Lalita Ghat on the holy river.

The project

  • The first phase of the project, which will be inaugurated, includes Tourist Facilitation Centre, Bhogshala, food court, viewing gallery etc.

  • The buildings will take some more weeks before being accessible to public. They have been constructed at a cost of around Rs 339 crore.

Boost to tourism

  • The improvement in infrastructure will give a boost to tourism in the holy city as well as nearing areas such as Sarnath.

  • The Shiva-lingam shaped Rudraksh convention centre will act as meeting room, art gallery, and multipurpose pre-function areas.

  • The roads of the city are upgraded, Banaras railway station has been modified and Ganga cruises are being held for the tourists. The Ganga Aarti will be shown on big screens throughout the city.

Heritage protection

  • Many heritage temples were discovered during the demolition project. This includes Gangeshwar Mahadev temple, the Manokameshwar Mahadev temple and the Jauvinayak temple.

  • Smart signages have been set up to provide information on the cultural importance of heritage sites and the city’s 84 ghats.
