World Health Day observed on 7 April

The World Health Day (WHD) is observed every year on 7 April to commemorate establishment of World Health Organization (WHO) on this day in 1948.

Significance this day

  • It aims at disseminating knowledge and awareness about human health, increasing life expectancy by adding good health to lives of people by promoting healthier living habits across globe.
  • Provide unique opportunity to mobilize action around specific health topic of concern to people all over the world.

2019 Theme

The theme for this year is “Universal health coverage”. It seeks to ensure that everyone can obtain care they need, when they need it, right in heart of the community. It also reminds world leaders that everyone should be able to access the health care they need, when and where they need it.

World Health Day

  • It is marked by WHO on 7 April to celebrate its founding in 1948. On this day in 1948, first World Health Assembly was held Geneva, Switzerland, which had decided to celebrate 7 April of each year with effect from 1950 as the World Health Day.
  • It is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by WHO along with World Tuberculosis Day, World Malaria Day, World Immunization Week, World AIDS Day, World Blood Donor Day, World No Tobacco Day, and World Hepatitis Day.

World Health Organization (WHO)

  • It is specialized agency of UN that acts as coordinating authority on international public health.
  • It was established on 7 April 1948, it succeeded the Health Organization, which was an agency of League of Nations.
  • It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It is member of United Nations Development Group (UNDG).
  • Its flag features the Rod of Asclepius as a symbol for healing.
