National Productivity Day observed in February 12

Date: 13 February 2019 Tags: Days & Dates

National Productivity Day is observed every year in India on February 12 to mark establishment of National Productivity Council (NPC). The theme for this year is “Circular Economy for Productivity & Sustainability” which represents unique opportunity for circular business models for Make-Use-Return.

This year it was 61st Foundation Day of NPC. Besides, February 12-18 was observed as National Productivity week throughout the country. The main observance of day was organised by NPC for encouraging all stakeholders in implementation of productivity tools and techniques with contemporary relevant themes.

What is Circular economy?

  • It follows principle of preservation and enhancement of natural capital by controlling finite stocks and balancing renewable resource flows. It is aimed at minimising waste and making most of resources.
  • It is alternative to traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose). In it, resources are used for as long as possible, maximum value is extracted from them and at the end of their service life, its products and materials are recovered and regenerated.
  • It works by extending product life span through improved design and servicing and relocating waste from end of supply chain to beginning – in effect, using resources more efficiently by using them over and over.
  • It presents opportunity for long term economic prospects and regeneration of materials. It has potential to increase productivity and create jobs, reduce carbon emissions and preserve valuable raw materials.

National Productivity Council (NPC)

  • It national level autonomous organization under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (earlier DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry to promote productivity culture in India.
  • It was established as registered society in February 1958 by Central Government as mission oriented apex organization to stimulate and promote cause of productivity in all sectors of the Indian economy.
  • It is tri-partite non-profit organization (NGO) with equal representation from government, employers and workers’ organizations. It is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • It also has representatives from professional and technical institutions including members from local productivity councils and chamber of commerce on its Governing Body.
  • It is constituent of Tokyo based Asian Productivity Organization (APO), an inter-governmental body of which India is founder member and also implements productivity promotion schemes of Government.
