The National Broadcasting day is observed every across India on July 23.  On this day in 1927, the first ever radio broadcast in India went on air from Bombay Station under private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company. Since then radio has been an important part in people's life in India.

Radio Broadcasting in India

The radio broadcasting in India was started during the British rule in 1923 under imitative of the Radio Club of Bombay. Later in 1927, IBC which was private entity then was granted permission by then British India Government to operate two radio stations in Mumbai (then Bombay) and Kolkata (then Calcutta).

Since then, radio had gained immense popularity and also changed the socio-economic life of people. In 1930, then British India Government took over radio broadcasting and started Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS). Later on 8th of June, 1936, ISBS became All India Radio (AIR).

Currently, AIR is one of the largest public broadcasting organisations in the world in terms of the spectrum of socio-economic, the number of languages of broadcasts and cultural diversity it serves. It services at present comprises around 414 stations located across the country with reach to 99.19% of the total population and 92% of the country’s area in 23 languages and 146 dialects.
