International Women’s day is celebrated on March 10 every year across the globe to mark contributions of women to society.



  • The idea of women’s day started during the early 1900s when there was widespread unrest among women regarding oppression and inequality.

  • Many women in USA marched demanding shorter working hours and equal pay along with voting rights. It used to be celebrated on last Sunday of February until 1913.

  • The idea of International day for woman was introduced during the second International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen in 1910.

  • International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. 

  • In Russia, women held a strike for bread and peace in order to protests against the death of more than 2 million Russian soldiers.

  • The United Nations celebrated women’s day for the first time in 1975. It passed a resolution to celebrate such an event in countries based on their historical significance.

  • Campaign themes over the years have also included: #ChooseToChallenge, #BalanceforBetter, #PressforProgress, #BeBoldforChange, #EachforEqual, #PledgeforParity, #MakeItHappen etc.
