Allium negianum

A new species of onion has been discovered in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand by a group of researchers.



The plant belongs to Allium species. This species include various genuses of staple foods such as onion and garlic.



  • The genus evolution extends to Irano-Turanian bio-geographical region, the Mediterranean basin and western North America.

  • The new onion species has been named as Allium negianum. It was discovered near the border area of Malari village, in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

  • They are found at an elevation of 3,000 to 4,800 m above sea level. Their common habitats include sandy river banks, grassy meadows and beside melting snow streams.

  • The most significant fact is that the particular species is restricted to the region of western Himalayas. They have not been reported from any other part of world.


Other facts

  • The scientific name of the plant is named after Dr Kuldeep Singh Negi, an explorer and Allium collector.

  • The discovery is new to scientific community but locals have been aware of its existence from many years.

  • Locals know these plants by different names such as phran, jambu, sakua, sungdung and kacho.

  • The onion is considered one of the best in the market. Locals are particularly fond of the one that grows in Niti valley.



The revelation of the new species may create a rush for tasting the onion. Indiscriminate harvest of leaves and bulbs may threaten the species.
