Lakshadweep proposals upset locals

Large number of local people in Lakshadweep have been angered as a result of new proposals floated by the administrator, Praful Patel.

 

Background

Praful Patel is the administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. He has been given additional charge of Lakshadweep after the death of Dineshwar Sharma.

 

Details

  • The administrator has said that the new proposals are aimed at safety of residents as well as promoting the islands as a tourist destination.

  • The local politicians and some MPs from Kerala have accused the administrator of trying to violate social and cultural fabric of the island.

 

New proposals

  • The administration seeks to ban slaughter of cow, calf, bull and buffalo without a certificate from authority. Fine of Rs 10,000 and jail term up to 1 year has been imposed.

  • People with more than two children are barred from becoming member of the gram Sabha. People already having more than two will not be disqualified.

  • Tourists will be served liquor in all the inhabited islands. Earlier, liquor was allowed in resorts on the uninhabited Bangaram Island.

  • The administration has brought Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation (LDAR) for development of towns in the island.

  • The Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Regulation to arrest individuals involved in anti-social activities for six months to a year without legal representation.

 

Lakshadweep islands

  • It consists of about 12 atolls across 36 different islands. Only 10 islands are inhabited. It became a union territory in 1956.

  • The largest population group is the Muslims (96%). Schedule Tribes make up about 94% of the population.
