He will succeed Justice AK Sikri who is retiring on March 6, 2019. Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi is Patron in Chief of NALSA. Justice SA Bobde will be senior most judge of Supreme Court after Justice Sikri retires.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin-left:0in; margin-right:0in; text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)</span></strong></span></span></p>
<ul>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It is statutory body that provides free legal aid and legal services to the weaker sections of the society. It is established under Legal Services Authorities (LSA) Act, 1987. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It aims at ensuring that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reasons of economic or other disabilities. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It fulfils provisions under Article 39A of constitution which mandates state to provide free legal aid to poor and weaker sections of society and promote justice on basis of equal opportunity.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">As per section 3(2) of LSA Act, CJI is Patron-in-Chief of NALSA and serving or retired Judge of Supreme Court nominated by President in consultation with CJI is its Executive Chairman. As a customary practice, senior most Judge of Supreme Court is usually nominated as Executive Chairman.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Objectives:</span></strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif""> Legally empower marginalized and excluded groups of society by providing effective legal representation, legal literacy and awareness and bridging the gap between the legally available benefits and the entitled beneficiaries.</span><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif""> </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Strengthen system of Lok Adalats and other alternate dispute resolution mechanisms to provide for informal, quick, inexpensive and effective resolution of disputes and minimize load of adjudication on overburdened judiciary.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Functions: </span></strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Provide free legal aid in civil and criminal matters for poor and marginalised people who cannot afford services of lawyer in any court or tribunal. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Identify specific categories of marginalised and excluded groups and formulates various schemes for implementation of legal service programmes. </span></span></span></li>

<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It is statutory body that provides free legal aid and legal services to the weaker sections of the society. It is established under Legal Services Authorities (LSA) Act, 1987. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It aims at ensuring that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reasons of economic or other disabilities. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">It fulfils provisions under Article 39A of constitution which mandates state to provide free legal aid to poor and weaker sections of society and promote justice on basis of equal opportunity.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">As per section 3(2) of LSA Act, CJI is Patron-in-Chief of NALSA and serving or retired Judge of Supreme Court nominated by President in consultation with CJI is its Executive Chairman. As a customary practice, senior most Judge of Supreme Court is usually nominated as Executive Chairman.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Objectives:</span></strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif""> Legally empower marginalized and excluded groups of society by providing effective legal representation, legal literacy and awareness and bridging the gap between the legally available benefits and the entitled beneficiaries.</span><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif""> </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Strengthen system of Lok Adalats and other alternate dispute resolution mechanisms to provide for informal, quick, inexpensive and effective resolution of disputes and minimize load of adjudication on overburdened judiciary.</span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Functions: </span></strong><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Provide free legal aid in civil and criminal matters for poor and marginalised people who cannot afford services of lawyer in any court or tribunal. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Identify specific categories of marginalised and excluded groups and formulates various schemes for implementation of legal service programmes. </span></span></span></li>
<li style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><span style="font-family:"Quicksand","serif"">Organise Lok Adalats for amicable and speedy resolution or settlement of disputes.</span></span></span></li>
