Cabinet clears scheme for controlling foot & mouth diseases of animals

Date: 01 June 2019 Tags: Agriculture

Union Cabinet has approved proposal to bear the entire cost of Rs 13,343 crore under existing scheme that seeks to control livestock diseases, especially foot and mouth disease (FMD) and brucellosis common amongst livestock, in the next five years.  This decision will benefit crores of farmers and improve the health of animals.

Key Facts

  • Funding: The scheme so far was implemented on cost-sharing basis between Central and State governments. Now, Central government has decided to bear entire cost of the programme
  • In case of FMD: The scheme envisages vaccination coverage to 30 crore bovines (cows-bulls and buffaloes) and 20 crore sheep/goat and 1 crore pigs at six months’ interval along with primary vaccination in bovine calves.
  • Incase Brucellosis control programme: It will be extended to cover 100% vaccination coverage of 3.6 crore female calves.

Threats of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis

These diseases are very common amongst livestock – buffaloes, cow-bulls, sheep, goats, pigs etc.  If a cow/buffalo gets infected with FMD, milk loss is upto 100% which could last for four to six months.  In case of Brucellosism the milk output reduces by 30%, during the entire life cycle of animal.  Besides, Brucellosis also causes infertility amongst animals. The infection of brucellosis can also be transmitted to farm workers and livestock owners.
