5th volume of Dictionary of Martyrs launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released fifth and last volume of “Dictionary of Martyrs”. This five-volume dictionary contains account of 1450 martyrs from India’s First War of Independence in 1857 to India’s Independence in 1947 from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Dictionary of Martyrs

  • The project was commissioned by Union Ministry of Culture in 2009 under to commemorate 150th anniversary of the first war of independence in 1857.
  • It has been executed by the Indian Council of Historical Research and focuses on 15,000 martyrs who sacrificed their lives from the first war of independence till 1947.
  • It has total five volumes and each volume covers different geographical zone. First three volumes were released between 2011 and 2014. Volume 4 and 5 were released thereafter.
  • It defines martyr as person who died or who was killed in action or in detention or was awarded capital punishment while participating in national movement for emancipation of India.
  • It has information of about 13,500 martyrs has been recorded in these volumes. It includes martyrs of 1857 Uprising, Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919), Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-34), Quit India Movement (1942-44), Revolutionary Movements (1915-34), Kissan Movements, Tribal Movements, Agitation for Responsible Government in Princely States (Prajamandal), Indian National Army (INA, 1943-45), Royal Indian Navy Upsurge (RIN, 1946), etc.
  • Significance: This dictionary is first attempt undertaken by Government at compiling names of martyrs on this scale. It is effort of government is to nurture and recall brave deeds of heroes of our freedom struggle. It seeks to have positive influence on future generations and inspire them to think of ‘India First’.
