Obesity can affect children’s working memory

  • Obese children have lower working memory in comparison to children with normal weight, a new study has demonstrated.
  • The study found that obese children had a thinner prefrontal cortex than normal-weight children.
  • The thinner cortex could be a factor in the decreased executive function as in earlier studies observed among children with higher BMI.

Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah find place in Wisden T20I team of the decade

  • Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are the only two Indians who have been able to make a cut to the T20I team of the decade announced by Wisden.
  • Kohli has found a place in Wisden's Test and ODI team of the decade as well.
  • Bumrah has been one of the best bowlers when it comes to death bowling and his economy rate has been second best to only Dale Steyn.

Indian Navy plans to build 6 nuclear submarines

  • The Indian Navy plans to build 24 submarines, including six nuclear attack submarines to strengthen its underwater fleet.
  • The Indian Navy has two nuclear submarines, INS Arihant and INS Chakra, the latter being leased from Russia.
  • Majority of the conventional submarines are over 25 years old. Thirteen submarines age between 17 and 32 years, making necessary for having new ones.
  • The Indian Ocean Region, the area of operations of the Indian Navy has witnessed rising activities of the Chinese Navy. The Indian Navy has been revamping its infrastructure, including procuring new ships to tackle the threat.

Maharashtra cabinet expansion

  • NCP leader Ajit Pawar took oath as the Deputy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
  • Thackeray's son Aaditya Thackeray is also set to take oath as part of the cabinet along with others.
  • The Maharashtra cabinet expansion comes 32 days after Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the chief minister of a coalition comprising the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, known as the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Hemant Soren takes oath as Jharkhand CM

  • Hemant Soren, working president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took oath as the 11th chief minister of Jharkhand.
  • This is the second time that Soren, 44, has taken oath as the chief minister of the state.
  • The JMM-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) alliance won 47 of the 81 seats in the assembly elections.
