Atal Innovation Rankings 2021

  • Seven Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru are among the top 10 central institutions in promotion and support of innovation and entrepreneurship development, according to Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements.
  • Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) is an initiative of Ministry of Education (MoE) to systematically rank all major higher educational institutions in India on indicators related to innovation, start-up and entrepreneurship development amongst students and faculties.
  • ARIIA evaluate institutions on parameters like patent filing and granted, number of registered students and faculty start-ups, fund generation by incubated start-ups, specialised infrastructure created by institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, etc.

Former US senate majority leader Harry Reid passes away

  • Harry Reid, who rose from poverty to become the US Senate majority leader and earned a reputation as a fierce partisan fighter, died. He was 82.
  • Reid, a former amateur boxer who represented Nevada in the US Congress as a Democrat for more than three decades, died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
  • Reid served as President Barack Obama’s point man in the Senate and helped secure congressional passage of Obama’s signature healthcare law, known as Obamacare, in 2010.

Indonesia refuses asylum for Rohingya refugees

  • Indonesian authorities will help repair a stranded boat packed with Rohingyas off its coast but will not allow its passengers to seek refuge in the country.
  • Authorities would provide humanitarian aid to the stricken vessel, including food, medicine and water, before turning it away.
  • Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 U.N. Convention on Refugees and is predominately seen as a transit country for those seeking asylum to a third country.

PM Modi inaugurates Kanpur Metro rail project

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first passenger of the Kanpur metro service as he inaugurated the completed section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project.
  • The entire length of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project is 32 km and is being built at a cost of over Rs 11,000 crore. Kanpur Metro is going to be the fastest built metro project in the country.
  • The construction of the project was started by CM Yogi Adityanath on November 15, 2019. On November 10, 2021, the trial run for the 9 KM stretch took place.
