China building second nuclear silo field

  • China is building a missile silo. As many as 110 silos have been detected in the western desert area of the country.
  • The report is based on satellite images obtained by an organisation. It said that this is the second such silo after one near Yumen in Gansu province.
  • It also claimed that the construction at Hami site began in March this year and is continuing at a rapid pace. The area is being developed in a grid-like outline.
  • These silos will add to China's arsenal of nuclear tipped Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), which has now swelled to 250 - constituting more than half of the size of the entire US ICBM force.

Moon-forming region observed for the first time around exoplanet

  • Scientists for the first time have spotted a moon-forming region around a planet beyond our solar system
  • The planet is surrounded by a disc of gas and dust massive enough that it could spawn three moons the size of the one orbiting Earth.
  • The researchers used the ALMA observatory in Chile's Atacama desert to detect the disc of swirling material accumulating around one of two new-born planets seen orbiting a young star called PDS 70.
  • It is called a circumplanetary disc, and it is from these that moons are born. The discovery offers a deeper understanding about the formation of planets and moons.

Indian badminton legend NanduNatekar passes away

  • NanduNatekar, one of the superstars in Indian badminton history, passed away in Pune due to prolonged illness. He was 88.
  • Natekar became the first Indian shuttler to win a tournament overseas — the Selangor International crown in Kuala Lumpur in 1956.
  • He was among the first batch of the Arjuna Award recipients in 1961 when the awards were introduced.
  • His international achievements included making it to the All England Championship quarterfinals in 1954 and representing India in the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in 1966.

Priya Malik wins gold in World cadet wrestling championships

  • Indian Wrestler Priya Malik has won a Gold Medal at the 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championship.
  • Malik defeated Kseniya Patapovich 5-0 in the summit clash and as a result, she won a gold medal at the World Cadet Championships in Hungary.
  • Priya Malik had also won the gold medal in the 2019 edition of Khelo India in Pune and she then went on to clinch gold at the 17th School Games held in Delhi.

National Tiger day

  • International Tiger Day is celebrated on July 29 to raise awareness about the conservation of the wild cat, which over the last 150 years has witnessed a massive drop of nearly 95% in its population.
  • On July 29, 2010, a number of countries became signatories to an agreement at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia.
  • The various tiger-populated countries also vowed that they would try to double the population of the animal by 2022.
  • The theme for the 2021 International Tiger Day is “Their survival is in our hands”. India accounts for nearly 70% of the world's total tiger population and has already achieved the target of doubling its numbers.
