New Education Policy

  • The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has approved the New Education Policy (NEP). The decision was taken at the Cabinet meet.
  • The draft New Education Policy 2019 was made public in June last year and the government sought suggestions from various stakeholders, including public till July 31, 2019.
  • The draft faced stiff opposition from various quarters over its three-language formula, four-year B.Ed program, board examination for Classes V and VIII, among others.
  • A panel led by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Kasturirangan had submitted the draft of the new NEP to the Union Human Resource Development Minister.

Indians lead in acquiring Australian citizenship

  • More than 38,000 Indians became Australian citizens in 2019-2020, a 60 percent increase from the previous year, and the largest diaspora group to be granted the country’s citizenship.
  • Out of the over 200,000 people who became Australian citizens in 2019-2020, 38,209 were Indians, the highest number on record, followed by Britishers, Chinese and Pakistanis.
  • In the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, the Australian government started online ceremonies which saw over 60,000 people being conferred the citizenship.

Centre unable to pay states'GST dues

  • Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance that the government is in no position to pay the GST share of States as per the current revenue sharing formula.
  • The GST Act has provisions to rework the formula for paying compensation to the State governments if the revenue collection drops below a certain threshold.
  • The Finance Ministry said the Centre had released the final installment of ?13,806 crore of GST compensation for the financial year 2019-20.

Global Tiger Day

  • The International Tiger Day is celebrated annually on July 29 to spread awareness about the need to protect tigers which are an endangered species. Tigers have lost 90% of their natural habitat and their world population is less than 4,000.
  • The realization that the wild tiger population has dropped by more than 95% since the beginning of the 20th century, led to the creation of International Tiger Day.
  • The day was marked for the first time in November 2010 at the 'Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit' in Russia, which aimed to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of the big cats and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues around the world.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma maintain top spots in ICC ODI rankings

  • India captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Rohit Sharma continue to occupy the top two batting spots in the ICC ODI rankings.
  • In the bowler's list, Bumrah (719) is behind New Zealand pacer Trent Boult (722), while Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman (701) occupies the third spot.
  • Ravindra Jadeja is the lone Indian to feature in the top 10 all-rounders rankings at the eight spot. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi is a leading pack in this category, closely followed by England all-rounder Ben Stokes.
