P Sainath selected for Fukuoka Prize

  • Noted journalist P. Sainath has been selected as one of the three recipients of the Fukuoka Prize for 2021. The Academic Prize and the Prize for Arts and Culture will go to Prof. Kishimoto Mio of Japan and filmmaker Prabda Yoon of Thailand respectively.
  • The Fukuoka Prize is given annually to distinguished people to foster and increase awareness of Asian cultures, and to create a broad framework of exchange and mutual learning among the Asian people.
  • The Grand Prize has earlier been awarded to Muhammad Yunus from Bangladesh, historian Romila Thapar, and sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan. The Prize was established in 1990.

India allows potato imports from Bhutan

  • The government has decided to permit the import of Potatoes from Bhutan without any license up to June 30, 2022. The retail potato prices have risen sharply over April and May.
  • Last October, as potato prices crossed ?40 per kilogram at the retail level, similar relaxations were offered for potato imports, which are usually restricted, from Bhutan till January 31 this year.
  • Inflation in potatoes was one of the biggest contributors to the surge in food inflation in May when overall retail inflation quickened to a six-month high of 6.3%

T20 World Cup to be shifted to UAE and Oman

  • The T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in October-November, has been officially moved from India to UAE and Oman. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) will remain the hosting board.
  • BCCI took the decision after evaluating the threat posed by Covid-19 in India. BCCI will now work with ICC to finalise the tournament schedule with an eye on the remainder of this year's IPL.
  • The IPL was stopped midway this summer amidst the devastating second wave. The T20 World Cup will likely start in Oman in the third week of October, after the IPL final, slated for mid-October.

World Bank revises China’s growth to 8.5%

  • The World Bank raised its forecast of China’s economic growth this year to 8.5% from 8.1% and said that a full recovery requires progress in vaccinations against the coronavirus.
  • The report adds to positive signs for China, the first major economy to rebound from the pandemic. Factory and consumer activity are back above pre-outbreak levels.
  • Chinese economic growth is likely to decline to 5.4% next year as the rebound from last year’s history-making global slump fades and activity returns to normal.
  • Its forecast was an increase over a report in April that said China and Vietnam were the only East Asian economies to achieve a “v-shaped” recovery in 2020 with output back above pre-coronavirus levels.

FIR filed against Twitter India MD for distorted map

  • Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari has been booked by the Uttar Pradesh Police in connection with a case over a distorted map of India on the micro-blogging platform.
  • The controversy erupted after it was discovered that a map of the world in the ‘Tweep Life’ section under ‘Careers’ on the platform’s website showed the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as lying outside the borders of India.
  • The distorted map had pins for three offices of Twitter in India, in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Twitter later removed the map after backlash from netizens.
