Southwest Monsoon makes onset

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared the onset of southwest monsoon over India, three days ahead of its normal date of June 1.
  • India`s annual monsoon, which delivers about 70% of the country`s rainfall, arrived on the coast of southern Kerala state.
  • The southwest monsoon is considered the lifeline of India’s agri-based economy. It has a major impact on the domestic economy, including the share markets.

Triangle of sadness wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

  • Swedish director Ruben Ostlund's class warfare comedy Triangle of Sadness won the Palme d'Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.
  • The jury’s second prize, the grand prix, was shared between Lukas Dhont’s tender boyhood drama “Close” and director Claire Denis’ film “Stars at Noon.”
  • Korean star Song Kang Ho was named best actor for his performance in Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s film “Broker,” while Best actress went to Zar Amir Ebrahimi for her performance as a journalist in Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider.”

Bengal to pass bill to make CM head of Universities

  • The West Bengal cabinet approved a proposal to introduce a Bill to make the Chief Minister the chancellor of all state-run universities.
  • The move comes in the backdrop of Governor JadgeepDhankhar’s clash with the state government over appointments of vice-chancellors across universities.
  • Dhankar had earlier alleged that the state government had appointed several Vice-Chancellors without Raj Bhavan’s consent.

Tomb of Sands wins International Booker Prize

  • Author Geetanjali Shree’s translated Hindi novel, ‘Tomb of Sand’, has become the first book written in an Indian language to be awarded the prestigious 2022 International Booker Prize.
  • Originally published in Hindi as Ret Samadhi, the book is translated into English by Daisy Rockwell.
  • Geetanjali has authored three novels and several collections of short stories, many of which have been translated into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean.
