Congress candidate from Kerala passes away

  • Malappuram District Congress Committee president and United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in Nilambur Assembly constituency V.V. Prakash died of a heart attack. He was 56.
  • His demise comes two days before the counting of votes has shocked UDF leaders in Kerala. Prakash had put up a strong fight in Nilambur against Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate.
  • Prakash had contested unsuccessfully against Minister for Higher Education K.T. Jaleel, an incumbent in Thavanur constituency in 2011. He lost to Mr. Jaleel by 6,854 votes.

Uttarakhand suspends char dham yatra

  • The Uttarakhand government suspended the ‘Char Dham Yatra’ in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases across the state.
  • This comes after Uttarakhand recorded the highest single-day spike of 6,054 Covid-19 cases, taking the cumulative tally to 1,68,616.
  • The Char Dham is a set of four pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. It is believed that visiting these sites helps achieve moksha. The four Dhams are, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

US aims to rollback sanctions to revive nuclear deal

  • The Biden administration is considering a near wholesale rollback of some of the most stringent Trump-era sanctions imposed on Iran in a bid to get the Islamic Republic to return to compliance with a landmark 2015 nuclear accord.
  • American officials are open to lifting any sanctions that are inconsistent with the nuclear deal or that deny Iran the relief it would be entitled to should it return to compliance with the accord.
  • When President Donald Trump re-imposed sanctions after withdrawing from the deal in 2018, he not only put the nuclear sanctions back in but also added layers of terrorism and other sanctions on many of the same entities.

Apollo-11 pilot Michael Collins passes away

  • The first moon mission member Astronaut Michael Collins died at the age of 90 in Florida. The astronaut had monitored the mission while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin created History by stepping on the moon.
  • Collins however did not step on the moon and stayed behind to pilot the command module. Astronaut Collins was a part of three crew members of Apollo 11 that went to the moon in 1969.
  • Collins spent the eight-day mission piloting the command module. While Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the moon's surface in the lunar lander, Eagle, Collins remained alone in the command module, Columbia.

India’s modifies foreign policy by accepting foreign aid

  • India has now started accepting gifts, donations and aid from foreign nations as the country reels under a massive shortage of oxygen, drugs and related equipment amid a surge in Covid cases.
  • There have been two other changes in approach that signal this shift. India now has no conceptual problem in procuring oxygen-related equipment and life-saving medicines from China.
  • All these three elements add up to a significant change in New Delhi’s strategy, which usually stresses on self-reliance and its own emerging-power image.
  • It has marked change from the policy of the last 16 years, since the UPA government under Manmohan Singh decided to not accept aid from foreign sources.
