PM Modi inaugurates India’s first driverless metro

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first ever fully-automated driverless train service on the Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro.
  • It will be equipped with several advanced features such as better regeneration of energy during braking, energy-efficient subsystems like LED lighting and air conditioning systems.
  • The cabin-less trains would be able to accommodate 40 commuters more in a six coach train as the driver's cab will not be required in such trains.
  • With this, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will enter the elite league of 7% of the world's Metro networks, which can operate without drivers.

Noted architect Vikram Lall passes away

  • Noted architect Vikram Lall, who designed the iconic Buddha Smriti Park in Patna, has died in Brussels.
  • Lall, who was part of the team that designed the Akshardham Temple in Delhi, was also an author and scholar of Buddhist architecture, and a connoisseur of Indian classical music.
  • His voluminous book Architecture of the Buddhist World: The Golden Lands charts the history, styles, and architecture of Buddhist temples, monasteries, and ancient monuments across Southeast Asia, including in Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand.

RCP Singh chosen as JDU national president

  • Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar stepped down as national president of the Janata Dal (United) and handed over the reins of the party to former bureaucrat turned politician, R C P Singh.
  • Singh, a second-term Rajya Sabha MP, is a close associate of Nitish Kumar and has been actively carrying on the JD (U) organizational work ever since he became an MP in 2010 after taking voluntary retirement from service.
  • Kumar’s term as JD (U) national president was to end in 2022 after his re-election as party chief in 2019. He takes over the reins of the party at a time when the JD (U) performed below par in Bihar assembly elections.

ICC team of the decade

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain of its Men's ODI Team of the Decade. The team led by Dhoni also includes star batsman Rohit Sharma and Indian skipper, Virat Kohli.
  • The ICC also included Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Jasprit Bumrah in its Men's T20I Team of the Decade. Dhoni has also been named as the skipper of the ICC's T20I Team of the Decade.
  • The ICC has also named Virat Kohli as captain of Test team of the decade. India’s premier off-spinner in Tests Ravichandran Ashwin is the only other Indian cricketer to have made the list of the ICC Men’s Test Team of the decade.

Tiger radio-collared in Sunderbans

  • For the first time in the Sunderbans, forest department officials and wildlife experts are taking the help of satellites and radio signals to study tigers and assess the human-tiger conflict.
  • In the Sunderbans, where human settlements and tiger territories are separated just by a river in many places, tiger straying is common.
  • The Sunderbans, located at the southern tip of West Bengal, account for the highest number of people killed by tigers in India.
  • Earlier, tigers were collared in the Sunderbans to collect data on their home range and territory. But this is the first time that the data will be used to assess the human-tiger conflict.
  • This initiative will help manage and safeguard the tigers, their habitat and human population as well as help understand the tigers’ behaviour and habitat utilisation patterns.
