Mary Kom defeats Nikhat Zareen to book Olympic spot

  • Experienced boxer and Six time World champion, MC Mary Kom defeated Nikhat Zareen to book spot for representing India in the Olympic qualifying round for 51KG category.
  • The duel was necessitated after Zareen publicly opposed the Boxing federation’s decision to send the names of winners of world championship as candidates.
  • Mary Kom will now fight for Tokyo 2020 spot in the Asia-Oceanic qualifiers from February 3-14, 2020 in Wuhan, China.

Mandatory linking of PAN and Aadhar card

  • The Income Tax department has sent out a reminder saying the last date for linking PAN Card and Aadhaar is 31 December and that those PAN cards that are not linked will become inoperative or invalid from January 2020.
  • In case you fail to link your PAN to Aadhaar, the income tax returns will be rejected.
  • Even if you do not come under the income tax slab, you will need to follow the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline or elsePAN will become inoperative.

Russian weapon that travels 27 times faster than speed of sound

  • An new intercontinental weapon that can fly 27 times the speed of sound became operational, bolstering the country’s nuclear strike capability.
  • The new weapon called Avangard Hypersonic glide missile and a similar system being developed by China have troubled the United States, which has pondered defense strategies.
  • The Avangard is launched atop an intercontinental ballistic missile, but unlike a regular missile warhead that follows a predictable path after separation it can make sharp maneuvers in the atmosphere en route to target, making it much harder to intercept.
  • Avangard is designed using new composite materials to withstand temperatures of up to 2,000 Celsius (3,632 Fahrenheit) resulting from a flight through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds.
  • Avangard is capable of flying 27 times faster than the speed of sound. It carries a nuclear weapon of up to 2 megatons.

Vistara airlines customers to get in-flight internet access

  • Vistara has partnered with Tata group company Nelco for inflight data services, which are expected to be rolled by the full service carrier shortly.
  • Vistara, a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, is also likely to be the first domestic carrier to provide inflight connectivity within India.
  • The services would be activated once the aircraft attains a minimum height of 3,000 metres in Indian airspace to avoid interference with terrestrial mobile networks.

Tamil Nadu initiates mosquito mapping

  • The Tamil Nadu government is planning to map the area-specific prevalence of different breeds of mosquitoes to aid in taking up appropriate control measures.
  • They will continuously monitor breeding of Aedes mosquitoes that cause dengue and chikungunya, Culex mosquitoes that cause Japanese Encephalitis and female Anopheles that cause malaria.
  • The pattern of mosquito breeding can change every year. By mapping, the officials will try to understand the effect of climate on mosquito population.
