China to send first asteroid mining robot into apace

  • Chinese private Beijing company, Origin Space, will send out the world’s first mining robot — termed as an ‘asteroid mining robot’ — into space by November 2020.
  • The robot will, however, not do any actual mining. The mission will be a preliminary assessment of the asteroid mining robot’s capabilities of identifying and extracting valuable resources, aimed at the eventual mining of asteroids.
  • The actual progress that can be made by the NEO-1 mission is subject to speculations, as it has never been attempted before. The project, if successful, can open up a trillion-dollar industry.

Nagorno-Karabakh tensions

  • Battles between Armenian and Azerbaijan forces over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh have continued as international calls for calm grew.
  • The clashes between the two former Soviet republics, which fought a war in the 1990s, were the latest flare-up of a long-running conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway region that is inside Azerbaijan but is run by ethnic Armenians.
  • Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 after fighting that left 30,000 dead and forced many more from their homes.

UPSC not to postpone civil services exam

  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) submitted before the Supreme Court that it is impossible to defer the civil services exams any further.
  • The apex court was hearing a plea filed by a group of UPSC aspirants seeking postponement of the upcoming Civil Services (prelims) Exam 2020.
  • The petition has sought postponement of the Civil Services Exam for two to three months in view of the flood, incessant rains in several parts of the country.

Bilateral Naval exercise JIMEX between India and Japan

  • Indian Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) ships conducted operations in close formation at JIMEX-2020, the 4th edition of India-Japan Maritime bilateral exercise.
  • It is being held in the North Arabian Sea from September 26 to 28.
  • JIMEX series of exercises commenced in January 2012 with a special focus on maritime security cooperation. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in October 2018 off Visakhapatnam, India.
  • Naval cooperation between India and Japan has increased in scope and complexity over the years. Advanced level of operations and exercises planned during JIMEX-20 are indicative of the continued upswing in Indo-Japanese defence relations.

Pakistani government to buy ancestral property of Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar

  • The provincial government in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has decided to purchase the ancestral houses of legendary Bollywood actors Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar to conserve the historic buildings.
  • The Department of Archaeology in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province has decided to allocate sufficient funds for purchasing the two buildings, which have been declared as the national heritage and lie in the heart of Peshawar city.
  • Raj Kapoor's ancestral home, known as Kapoor Haveli, is situated in the fabled Qissa Khwani Bazar in Peshawar.
  • Veteran actor Dilip Kumar's over 100-year-old ancestral house is also located in the same locality. The house is in shambles and was declared as national heritage in 2014 by the then Nawaz Sharif government.
