Supreme court sets up 5 member constitution bench to hear pleas in Article 370

  • A five-judge Bench led by Justice N.V. Ramana has been formed to start hearing from October 1 petitions challenging the Centre's move scrap Article 370 of the constitution.
  • The petitions have questioned the Centre’s sudden decision to unilaterally unravel the unique federal scheme, under cover of President’s Rule, which undermines crucial elements of due process and the rule of law.

INS Khandheri inducted into navy

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has commissioned indigenously developed submarine INS Khandheri into the Indian Navy.
  • INS Khanderi is second Kalvari class diesel-electric submarine. Four more are going to be commissioned in the coming years. The first, INS Kalvari, was commissioned in December 2017.
  • Khanderi is built at the state-run Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) with the help of French technology under Project 75 and has undergone rigorous sea trials for over two and a half years.

First Arab man in International Space Station

  • An Emirati astronaut Hazzaa-al-Mansoori  has made history as the first Arab to reach the International Space Station (ISS).
  • A Russian spacecraft carried al-Mansoori of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with Russia's Oleg Skripochka and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir.
  • Al-Mansoori will spend eight days on the ISS and will be the first Emirati and the first Arab on the orbiting laboratory, but not the first Muslim.

Mohammed Azharuddin elected president of HCA

  • Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin was elected president of Hyderabad Cricket Association.
  • Azharuddin, has represented India in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs, after which he was tangled in match fixing scandal which led to a ban on him from playing cricket.
