Deepika Padukone to be part of Cannes jury

  • Actor Deepika Padukone will be a part of the competition jury at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.
  • French actor Vincent Lindon will be heading the jury at the 75th edition of the coveted festival, which will run from May 17-28.
  • Padukone is part of the eight-member jury which will reward one of the 21 films in competition with the Palme d’or during the closing ceremony on Saturday May 28.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari appointed Pakistan’s Foreign minister

  • Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took oath as the foreign minister in the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
  • It is for the first time when Mr Bilawal has been given a key post in the government and assigned the key portfolio of foreign minister of the country.
  • PPP is the second largest party in the current coalition government of Prime Minister Sharif who was appointed on April 11. Prime Minister Shehbaz is the president of PML-N.

Uttar Pradesh removes loudspeakers from religious places

  • The Uttar Pradesh government has removed unauthorised loudspeakers from religious places and lowered the volume of authorised loudspeakers to within the permissible limit.
  • The drive was launched after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently instructed officials to ensure that sound of loudspeakers does not disturb others outside the premises where it was installed.
  • The highest number of loudspeakers were removed in Lucknow zone (2395), Gorakhpur (1788), Varanasi (1366), Meerut (1204) and Prayagraj.

PM Modi promises to withdraw AFSPA from Northeast completely

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi said efforts are on to remove AFSPA completely from the northeast region.
  • He said the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act could be withdrawn from various parts of the region as the law and order situation has improved in the last eight years.
  • The Centre had announced a reduction of the disturbed areas imposed under the AFSPA in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur from April 1, after decades.

Russia cuts gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria

  • Russia halted gas flows to Poland and Bulgaria in a major escalation, and said it will keep supplies switched off until the two countries agree to Moscow’s demands to pay for the fuel in rubles.
  • European gas prices surged 20% on Russia’s sudden move to turn its vast energy resources into a weapon against Ukraine’s allies.
  • Paying in rubles would help protect Russia’s huge gas revenues from sanctions or seizure by the EU. The move also appeared aimed at ensuring Gazprombank would remain largely untouched.
