Nomadland wins best picture awards at Oscars

  • Nomadland won Best Picture, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Director for Chloe Zhao. Chloe is the second woman to win this year in the Academy’s 93 years of giving awards.
  • The best actor award went to Anthony Hopkins for his performance in the dementia drama “The Father.” The award had been widely expected to go to Chadwick Boseman.
  • Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Soul and Sound of Metal – all won two Oscars each at the ceremony.

Earthquake of magnitude 6.4 hits Assam

  • A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale jolted Assam and other parts of Northeast. Six aftershocks were recorded in the hours after the first quake shook up the region.
  • The earthquake originated in Tezpur of Assam and tremors were felt even in North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.
  • A road in epicentre of the earthquake has developed a crack following the impact of the earthquake while several buildings and walls in the area suffered damages.

ADB predicts India’s GDP to grow 11% this fiscal

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected that India's gross domestic product (GDP) will rebound strongly by 11 per cent in 2021-22 due to continued economic recovery.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has however cautioned that the surge in COVID-19 cases may put the country’s economic recovery at risk.
  • The gross domestic product (GDP) of South Asia is expected to rebound to 9.5% this year, following a contraction of 6% in 2020, before moderating to 6.6% next year (2022).
  • ADB said the economic growth in developing Asia is set to rebound to 7.3% this year, supported by a healthy global recovery and an early progress on COVID-19 vaccines.

Damselfly species discovered in Western Ghats

  • Researchers have discovered two damselfly species from Satara district in Maharashtra, which forms part of northern Western Ghats.
  • The new endemic damsels, Euphaea thosegharensis and Euphaea pseudodispar, are restricted to the high elevation streams and riparian patches of Satara district around Thoseghar and Kaas lake in Maharashtra.
  • Euphaeathosegharensis is similar to Euphaeacardinalis, while Euphaeapseudodispar is similar to Euphaeadispar but can be easily separated by its colouration and morphology.

Samsung family to pay $10.8 billion in inheritance tax

  • Samsung's founding family will donate tens of thousands of rare artworks and give hundreds of millions of dollars to medical research to help them pay a massive inheritance tax.
  • This would be the largest-ever amount in South Korea and more than three times the country's total estate tax revenue for last year.
  • The family plans to divide the payment in six instalments over five years, while making the first payment this month.
  • Giving away the late chairman's vast collection of masterpieces could help smoothen the payment as his family wouldn't need to pay taxes on donated artworks.
  • The Lee family will also donate 1 trillion won ($900 million) to help fund infectious disease research and treatment for children with cancer and rare illnesses.
