Asia’s largest Tulip Garden opens in Srinagar

  • The Asia’s largest tulip garden was thrown open in Srinagar, which is planted over 30 hectares located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Range.
  • A festival will also be organised from April 3 when the garden will be in full bloom. The six-day festival will showcase handicraft, culture, cuisine.
  • Kashmir is also witnessing the flowering of almond trees. The Badamwari Garden in Srinagar was opened for visitors on March 21.

Reading mind with ultrasound

  • A less-invasive technology called functional ultrasound has now shown the ability to map brain activity even from regions deep within the brain.
  • It produces detailed images of the neural signals that could not be seen with other non-invasive techniques like fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging).
  • The device interprets the person’s neural activity and intentions and moves the robotic arm correspondingly.
  • A major limitation for the development of BMIs is that the devices require invasive brain surgery to read out neural activity.

Indian American Dr Vivek Murthy sworn in as US Surgeon General

  • Indian-American physician Vivek Murthy has been sworn in as the 21st Surgeon General of the US. He will be the highest ranking Indian American in the administration.
  • He has occupied the position of America's Surgeon General for the second time. In 2011, president Barack Obama tapped him to serve on the advisory group on prevention, health promotion, and integrative and public health.
  • As US Surgeon General, Murthy will advise President Biden on the coronavirus pandemic and will be the federal government's leading voice on public health.

Indian cosmonauts complete their training for Gaganyaan mission

  • The four cosmonauts shortlisted for Gaganyaan, India's first manned space mission, have completed their training in Russia.
  • The ?10,000-crore ambitious project is expected to be launched in 2022, the year of the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence.
  • The Four Indian Air Force fighter pilots are likely to be potential candidates for the Gaganyaan project.
  • The contract for the training of Indian candidates for space flight between the Glavkosmos company (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) and the Manned Space Flight Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation was signed on June 27, 2019.
