Global prosperity index

  • The first-ever Prosperity & Inclusion City Seal and Awards (PICSA) Index was released in the Basque Country capital of Bilbao in northern Spain.
  • Bangalore emerged as India's highest-ranked city at No. 83 in a new index of the world's 113 cities in terms of economic and social inclusivity, topped by Zurich in Switzerland.
  • Delhi at 101 and Mumbai at 107 are the other Indian cities to make at the index.

Vaccination can prevent adult pneumonia

  • While efforts are being made towards reducing the  pneumonia deaths among children, many countries, including India, are struggling with increasing incidence of deaths among adults due to it.
  • Vaccination protects an individual against pneumococcal bacteria and reduces the chances of contracting the disease, especially among senior adults.
  • Pneumonia, is essentially a lung infection which leads to the inflammation of the lungs air sacs.
  • It can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi; the air sacs present in the lungs are filled with either pus or fluids leading to their inflammation.

Increased air pollution linked to higher glaucoma

  • A recent study has been found that people residing in places with higher amounts of fine particulate matter pollution were 6 per cent more likely to suffer from glaucoma than those in the least polluted areas.
  • Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness and affects over 60 million people worldwide.
  • It most commonly results from a build-up of pressure from fluid in the eye, causing damage to the optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease.

FASTag implementation deadline

  • The Ministry of Highways and Roads, has made it mandatory for all vehicles, private and commercial to immediately switch to electronic toll payment also known as FASTag across the country.
  • With this implementation, people driving their vehicles can cross highways seamlessly without having to stop at toll plazas to pay toll tax.
  • FASTag is basically a device which is affixed on a vehicles's windscreen. So, when one crosses a toll, a tag reader will scan the FASTag and deduct the toll charges electronically with no manual intervention.
  • Users will also receive service SMSes for transaction, low balance and other details.

CARTOSAT-3 launched into orbit

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched its earth imaging and mapping satellite CARTOSAT-3 along with 13 other nano-satellites on PALV-C47 from Sriharikota.
  • CARTOSAT-3 would address the increased user's demands for the large scale urban planning, rural resource and infrastructure development, coastal land use and land cover.
  • The 13 commercial nano satellites from the United States are being carried as part of the commercial arrangement with NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL).
