Arctic tern arrive in Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park

  • The annual migration of birds from the Arctic to the Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve, has begun with an enormous flock seen swarming the Manoli Islands inside the park.
  • The seasonal ritual of migration occurs every year over the Central Asian Flyway (CAF), comprising 29 countries including Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar and Maldives.
  • The Arctic birds begin their journey through India from the Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha, and fly over to Kanniyakumari, the southern-most tip of coastal Tamil Nadu. The flocks again return in March on their way back.

US set to appeal UK’s refusal to extradite Julian Assange

  • The U.S. government is scheduled to ask Britain’s High Court to overturn a judge’s decision that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should not be sent to the United States to face espionage charges.
  • In January, a lower court judge refused an American request to extradite Mr. Assange on spying charges over WikiLeaks’ publication of secret military documents a decade ago.
  • District Judge denied extradition on health grounds, saying Mr. Assange was likely to kill himself if held under harsh U.S. prison conditions.

Saudi Arabia pledges $4.2 billion to support Pakistan’s economy

  • Saudi Arabia pledged to provide $4.2 billion in assistance to Pakistan, providing relief to the South Asian nation at a time when its foreign-exchange reserves are dwindling fast.
  • Pakistan, which only recently averted a balance-of-payments crisis, is separately seeking to reach a deal with the International Monetary Fund for reviving a $6 billion bailout program, which is crucial to boost its forex pile.
  • Reserves with Pakistan’s central bank have declined for five consecutive weeks to $17.5 billion as of Oct. 15 and the rupee has consistently depreciated against the dollar, making it the worst performing Asian currency.
