Air pollution linked to Covid-19 cases

  • A first of its kind pan India study says Mumbai and Pune are among hotspots where high air pollution from the transport and industrial sectors is related to a higher number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
  • The study dealt with how people living in highly polluted areas are more vulnerable to coronavirus infections.
  • In the study, COVID-19 cases were observed from March 2020 to November 2020, while national PM2.5 emissions load was estimated from the base year 2019.
  • The study indicated that higher numbers of COVID-19 cases are found in States like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Gujarat, where exposure to the prolonged high concentration of PM2.5 is relatively high, especially in the cities, due to over-use of fossil fuel.

DRDO tests advanced Pinaka rocket

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired an extended range version of indigenously developed "Pinaka" rocket at Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
  • Altogether 25 Enhanced Pinaka Rockets were test fired in quick succession against targets at different ranges. The rockets were launched from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL).
  • All the flight articles were tracked by various Range instruments. The rocket system has been developed jointly by Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).

Genome sequencing laboratory for Rajasthan

  • The facility for genome sequencing to identify new variants of SARS-CoV-2 has been started in Rajasthan, making it the first State in the country to have such a provision for complete sequencing at the State level.
  • The facility had been made available in the State at a cost of ?1 crore for getting information about new variants of the virus.
  • The samples from the State were so far being sent to the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology’s laboratory in New Delhi.
  • The machine installed at SMS Medical College has started functioning with the capacity to test 20 samples a day, while the report is received in three to four days.

Environment ministry to deploy LiDAR report for boosting groundwater in forest

  • Wapcos, a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Jalshakti, has prepared detailed project reports (DPRs) for augmenting water and fodder availability in forest areas in 10 States.
  • Wapcosused a sophisticated remote sensing technology called LiDAR to survey forest areas in these States and prepare the reports.
  • This unique experiment is expected to help augment water and fodder in jungles areas, thereby, reducing human-animal conflict, helping in groundwater recharge and local communities.
  • The States involved include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura.

Pakistan to remain in FATF Grey list

  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has refused to take Pakistan out of the ‘Grey List’ after Pakistan had failed to take appropriate action against UN-designated terrorists.
  • The global anti-money laundering and terror financing body has acknowledged some progress made by Pakistan, but it will remain on “increased monitoring list”.
  • The UN designated terrorists based in Pakistan include Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Azhar, Lashker-e-Taiba founder Saeed and its “operational commander” Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. All three are most wanted terrorists in India for their involvement in numerous terrorist acts.
