Air India proposes to acquire complete stake of Air Asia India

  • Air India has proposed to acquire the entire equity of AirAsia India.The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has also notified the proposal for Air India’s acquisition of AirAsia India.
  • At present, Tata Sons (TSPL) holds 83.67 percent of the equity share capital of Air Asia India. Both airlines are run by Tata Sons.
  • Air India is a wholly owned subsidiary, while AirAsia India is a joint venture with Malaysia’s AirAsia, which has 16.33 percent of the shareholding.

China detects first human case of H3N8 virus

  • China has recorded the first human infection with the H3N8 strain of bird flu, but the risk of it spreading among people was low.
  • The H3N8 variant has previously been detected elsewhere in the world in horses, dogs, birds and seals but no human cases of H3N8 have been reported.
  • Many different strains of bird flu are present in China and some sporadically infect people, usually those working with poultry.

  • Former Indian women’s hockey team captain ElveraBritto passed away due to old age related problems. She was 81.
  • Elvera, the eldest of the three famous Britto sisters (others are Rita and Mae), ruled the domestic circuit from 1960 to 1967, guiding Karnataka to seven national titles.
  • In 1965, Elvera became only the second woman hockey player to be conferred with the Arjuna Award after Anne Lumsden (1961).

South Korea to examine joining QUAD

  • South Korea’s President-elect Yoon Suk-yeolhas announced that his country will examine joining the Quad grouping to strengthen its military position.
  • Officials from Quad countries had stated in the past that there was no policy yet on expanding the grouping consisting of India, Australia, Japan and the U.S.
  • The Quad leaders held a virtual summit in March to announce a new mechanism for humanitarian assistance in the Indo-Pacific, and the impact of the Ukraine crisis on the region.

Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to jail on corruption charges

  • A court in military-ruled Myanmar found deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of corruption and sentenced her to five years in jail.
  • The case was the first of 11 corruption charges against the Nobel laureate, each carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
  • In the latest round of a legal onslaught against the 76-year-old Nobel laureate, Suu Kyi was accused of accepting a bribe of $600,000 cash and gold bars.
