South Korea’s former President Roh Tae-woo passes away

  • South Korean former president Roh Tae-woo, a decorated war veteran who played a pivotal role in the transition to democratic elections from rule by authoritarian leaders, has died.
  • The 88-year-old had been in poor health since 2002 when he received surgery for prostate cancer and was repeatedly hospitalized in recent years.
  • In the space of a few decades, Roh went from military coup conspirator to South Korea's first popularly elected president, before ending his political career with a jail sentence.

BCCI announces two new IPL franchises

  • The SanjivGoenka-owned RPSG group has won the Lucknow franchise and private equity firm CVC Capital the Ahmedabad franchise.
  • BCCI held the process of identifying the two new IPL franchises in Dubai. It will add two more teams and expand the 2022 tournament to 10 teams.
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad, the last team to join IPL via a tender process in 2012, had paid Rs. 850 crore. The base price for the new team this time was fixed at Rs. 2,000 crore.

Japan’s princess loses royal status after marrying commoner

  • Japanese Princess Mako married a commoner and lost her royal statusstatu in a union that has split public opinion.
  • Mako also refused a one-off payment of around £944,000 typically given to royal women who marry commoners and become ordinary citizens.
  • Female members of the royal family must renounce their royal status when they marry a commoner, a practice that has resulted in a decline in the size of the royal family and a shortage of successors to the throne.

Silver Forget-me-not butterfly observed in Tamil Nadu for the first time

  • Within a span of five weeks, a rare butterfly species, called the Silver Forget-Me-Not (FMN), has been spotted twice inside the Srivilliputhur-Meghamalai Tiger Reserve.
  • The butterfly was first sighted on September 5 inside the Srivilliputhur grizzled squirrel sanctuary, and was then seen again on October 9 near the AyyanarFalls.
  • The common FMN is bluish-silver with a spot in the middle of its two straight discal bands. The Silver FMN is pale silvery with slightly curved bands and the spot is near the upper band.
  • The Silver FMN was earlier recorded in Chinnar, Kerala, in 2019; in Andaman & Nicobar Islands between 2015 and 2017 and in Sikkim, West Bengal and the Northeast States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura between 2005 and 2020.

Tamil film Koozhangal chosen as India’s official entry to Oscars

  • Tamil drama Koozhangal (Pebbles), directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS, has been selected as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards.
  • The movie follows an alcoholic abusive husband who, after his long-suffering wife runs off, sets out with his young son to find her and bring her back.
  • Koozhangal had won the top honour, the Tiger Award for best film, at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), earlier this year. It was screened at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA).
