Huawei CFO leaves Canada after deal with US

  • Huawei Chief Financial Officer MengWanzhou flew home to China after reaching an agreement with U.S. prosecutors to end the bank fraud case against her.
  • Within hours of the news of the deal, two Canadians who were arrested shortly after Ms. Meng was taken into custody in December 2018 were released from Chinese jails and were on their way back to Canada.
  • The deal also opens U.S. President Joe Biden up to criticism from China hawks in Washington who argue his administration is capitulating to China and one of its top companies at the center of a global technology rivalry between the two countries.
  • Ms. Meng was arrested at Vancouver International Airport on a U.S. warrant, and indicted on bank and wire fraud charges for allegedly misleading HSBC in 2013 about the telecommunications equipment giant’s business dealings in Iran.

Chola palace in unearthed in Gangaikondacholapuram

  • Substantial portions of brick structures of what are believed to be the remains of a Chola palace have been unearthed by archaeologists during the latest excavations atGangaikondacholapuram.
  • Roofing tiles and iron nails have also been recovered in large numbers. A Chola-period copper coin and an ivory object, glass beads and bangles, hopscotch markers, spouted knobs, terracotta pieces and ceramics were discovered.
  • Established by King Rajendra Chola I (1012-1044 CE) after his victorious expedition up to the Gangetic plains, Gangaikondacholapuram was the capital of the Cholas for about 250 years from about 1025 CE.

India rejects China’s claim on Galwan

  • India rejected Beijing’s claim that the Galwan valley incident took place because India violated all agreements and encroached upon China’s territory.
  • China had said that Galwan Valley incident last year was caused by the Indian side’s illegal trespass of the LAC to encroach on Chinese territory, in violation of previously-signed treaties and agreements.
  • Twenty Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops died in the Galwan Valley clash, which marked the worst violence since 1967.

Cyclone Gulab to develop in Bay of Bengal

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a cyclone is most likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal. Once intensified, the storm will be named Cyclone Gulab proposed by Pakistan.
  • Heavy rain is likely over Telangana, north interior Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. Due to rough sea conditions and intense winds, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea till Monday.
  • A deep depression will be formed in the east-central Bay of Bengal which was about 510km east-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 590kms east- northeast of Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh.

Feminist activist KamlaBhasin passes away

  • Feminist activist, author and a stalwart of the women’s rights movement in India, KamlaBhasin, passed away.
  • Since the 1970s, Bhasin has been a prominent voice in the women’s movement both in India, as well as in other South Asian countries.
  • In 2002, she founded the feminist network ‘Sangat’, which works with underprivileged women from rural and tribal communities, often using non-literary tools such as plays, songs and art.
  • Bhasin has authored several books on gender theory and feminism, many of which have been translated into more than 30 languages.
