Ex- President of France Jacques Chirac dies

  • Jacques Chirac, former French president who was the first leader to acknowledge France’s role in the Holocaust and  opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, died at age of 86.
  • Chirac was elected to two consecutive terms as president, after having already served as prime minister under centrist and Socialist presidents.

Rupa Gurunath elected TNCA president

  • Rupa Gurunath, daughter of former BCCI chief N. Srinivasan, has been elected unopposed as president of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).
  • She will be the first woman to head a state unit of the Indian cricket Board.
  • Ms. Gurunath is an executive director in India Cements, her father’s company which owns the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia to launch joint Islamic TV channel

  • Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia have decided to jointly launch an English language Islamic television channel to correct misperceptions and confront the challenges posed by Islamophobia.
  • The channel will telecast series and films produced on Muslims to educate and inform the world on the Islamic history.

Earthquake near India-Pakistan border

  • An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 struck Bhimber, close to the India-Pakistan border at 12 30 pm on 26th September.
  • The United States’ Geological Survey said that the quake had an epicentre 4.7km off New Mirpur and at a depth of 10 km from the surface.
  • Seismicity in the Himalayas dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates, which are converging at present.

Kristalina Georgieva appointed IMF Managing Director

  • Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva was confirmed as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
  • She will become the first person from an emerging economy to head the global lender.
  • Ms. Georgieva will replace Christine Lagarde, who is set to take over the European Central Bank later this year.
