Taliban makes new appointment

  • Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the co-founder and deputy leader of the Taliban, is likely to be the next president of Afghanistan.
  • Taliban have appointed loyal, senior veterans to the posts of Finance Minister and Defence minister, as it switches focus from its military conquest of the land-locked nation.
  • The new Defence Minister is Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir, a former detainee at the US prison in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
  • The new Finance Minister is Gul Agha, who is on international sanctions lists for acting as the Taliban's financial chief. Sadr Ibrahim has been named as acting Interior Minister.

EAM S Jaishankar briefs political party leaders in Afghanistan situation

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed leaders of political parties on the latest situation in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s takeover of the country last week.
  • Besides Mr. Jaishankar, Union Minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha PiyushGoyal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi were also present during the briefing in Parliament House annexe.
  • Apart from India’s evacuation mission from Afghanistan, the ministers are also expected to share the government’s assessment of the situation in the war-torn country.

India and Maldives sign pack on greater Male connectivity project

  • India and Maldives will sign a contract on the mega Greater Male Connectivity project (GMCP), the largest infrastructure project in the country.
  • The project, funded by an Indian grant of $100 m and a Line of Credit of $400 m is also the biggest new development project by India in its neighbourhood in recent years.
  • The project will begin with the signing of the contract between the Maldives government and Indian infrastructure company AFCONS in Male.
  • It will involve the construction of a 6.74 km long bridge and causeway link connecting the capital Male with the adjoining islands of Villingli, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
  • Before this, the largest connectivity project in the Maldives was the 1.4 km Chinese-funded bridge connecting Male to the Maldives airport in Hulhule island, and to the Hulumalhe island.

Sathiyan wins third international singles title

  • G. Sathiyan, the top seed, bagged his third International men’s singles title with a convincing win over Yevhen Pryschchepa of Ukraine in the final of the Czech International table tennis tournament.
  • Earlier, Sathiyan had advanced to the final after his Swedish opponent TrulsMoregardh retired hurt midway through the semifinal.
  • Last week, the 28-year-old had paired up with compatriot Manika Batra to win the mixed doubles title at the WTT Contender in Budapest.

Centre clears names for Supreme court judge appointment

  • The government has cleared all nine names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointments as apex court judges.
  • One of the names, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, may be in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India, thus scripting history.
  • The files have been forwarded to the President for further formalities and issuance of warrant of appointments.
  • The nine names include eight judges and one lawyer from the Supreme Court Bar.The Collegium had for the first time recommended three women judges.
