Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy passes away

  • Freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, who recently recovered from Covid-19, died of cardiac arrest in Bengaluru. He was 103.
  • Doreswamyis known for his participation in the QuitIndia movement and Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan movement. He had campaigned to revive lakes in Bengaluru.
  • Doreswamy joined the freedom struggle in June 1942, on Mahatma Gandhi’s call. He was also jailed for arson but was released in 1943.
  • In his lifetime, Doreswamy took up several causes, from the protests against the Kaiga nuclear plant in north Karnataka to the rights of landless farmers.

Edible oil prices soar to 11-year high

  • The monthly average retail prices of packed edible oils such as groundnut, mustard, vanaspati, soya, sunflower and palm oils have soared this month to their highest levels in over a decade.
  • The increase in prices of cooking oils comes in a midst of a pandemic and lockdowns in different states that have hit economic activities.
  • Domestic edible oil prices usually mirror international prices since 60 per cent of India’s demand is met through imports.

New land regulations sparks protests in Lakshadweep

  • Lakshadweep administration has introduced reforms such as the Lakshadweep Animal Preservation Regulation, Lakshadweep Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Regulation, Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation and amendment to the Lakshadweep Panchayat Staff Rules.
  • Administrator Patel’s recent reforms have attracted widespread resentment among the local populace with many believing the changes are aimed at destroying the unique culture and tradition of the islands.
  • Patel is the administrator of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and was given additional charge of Lakshadweep following the demise of administrator Dineshwar Sharma.

Subodh Kumar Jaiswal appointed as CBI director

  • The government has appointed Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as the CBI Director for a period of two years from the date he assumes charge.
  • Jaiswal  was CISF chief and is a 1985-batch IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre. He was recently deputed to the central service.
  • Other two officers shortlisted were Special Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs V.S.K. Kaumudi and another IPS officer of Bihar cadre K.R. Chandra.
