Dr. Hema Divakar wins Global Asian of the Year 2018-19 award

  • Dr. Hema Divakar, a Bengaluru-based medical doctor was honoured with 'Global Asian of the Year 2018-19' award in Dubai.
  • She was awarded for her yeomen services and contributions to women's healthcare ecosystem in India.
  • She received award under 'In Service of the Society and the Nation' category at the Asian Business & Social Forum.
  • This award is conferred on those who stand out for vision, action and ingenuity and represent contemporary ideas to make global impact.

Saray Khumalo: 1st black African women to climb Mount Everest

  • Zambia-born Johannesburg resident Saray Khumalo became first black African women to conquer summit of Mount Everest (848m). She achieved this feat in her fourth attempt.
  • She also has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Aconcagua in Argentina and Mount Elbrus in Russia
  • She uses her expeditions to raise funds for libraries and support children's educational activities in Africa. So far, she raised about $80,000 for children's education and libraries.
  • She also supports a foundation that takes care of orphans, providing them with education, shelter and food.
  • Note: South African park ranger Sibusiso Vilane in 2003 became first black person to summit Mount Everest.

Google bans Huawei from some Android updates

  • Search engine giant Google has banned  Chinese company Huawei, the second largest phone maker from some of its Android updates.
  • This comes after the US government ban Huawei and sought to blacklist it around the world over national security reasons.
  • Google’s suspension follows report calling for Huawei to be prevented from supplying 5G mobile networks in United Kindgom.
  • Australia, New Zealand and Canada already have  banned Huawei as supplier for its future 5G network.

Adani Port Ltd to set up container terminal in Myanmar

  • Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has signed agreement with Myanmar Government to develop and operate a container terminal at Yangon Port in Myanmar.
  • This port site is located at city cluster & inner harbor of Yangon Port. Its terminal will have quay length of 635 meters with handling capacity for three vessels at a time.
  • It will act as a network point to feed into our upcoming transshipment hub at Vizhinjam. It will be integrated with its Ports/Terminals along the east and south coast of India.
  • It will help to unlock synergies by offering multiple entry and exit points for shipping lines which wish to call on this region.
