Kerala to open public kitchens

  • The Kerala state government announced community kitchens run by local bodies to ensure that the 21-day lockdown does not leave anyone starving.
  • People can dial for food, which would be served by volunteers at their doorstep. Local bodies will also provide food to those under home quarantine.
  • The state government has also decided to take care of migrant workers in Kerala, mainly from North and Northeastern states.

Railways to make ventilators and convert coaches to isolation wards

  • The railways is preparing for a long battle against COVID-19 by creating isolation wards in trains for rural and remote areas, and manufacturing of ventilators in its factories.
  • While the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala has been tasked with the duty of converting LHB coaches into isolation wards, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, is attempting to manufacture ventilators.
  • The layout is being prepared and a decision will be taken as to how many patients can be accommodated in a coach keeping in mind various factors —distance, hygiene, necessary equipment to monitor health, and most importantly, exclusive bathroom usage.

Veteran Bollywood actress Nimmi dies

  • Veteran actress Nimmi passed away at her Mumbai home. She was 88 years old.
  • The actress, who appeared in films through 1950s and 60s, was born Nawab Banoo. Raj Kapoor gave her screen name: Nimmi. She first lit up the screen in the film Barsaat, in 1949. 
  • Over the next years, Nimmi worked with Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar. She was married to writer Ali Raza, who passed away in 2007.

Acclaimed photographer Nemai Ghosh passes away

  • Veteran photographer Nemai Ghosh, who had a long association with filmmaker Satyajit Ray, passed away at a hospital in Kolkata on March 25. He was 86.
  • A Padma Shri recipient, Nemai Ghosh had also penned books such as Manik Da: Memoirs of Satyajit Ray, which are invaluable references for Ray enthusiasts.

Co-founder of Bombay Canteen, Floyd Cardoz dies of COVID-19

  • Renowned chef Floyd Cardoz, who ran the successful 'Bombay Canteen', 'O Pedro' and 'Bombay Sweet Shop' in Mumbai and New York's 'Tabla', passed away due to complications from the coronavirus.
  • The co-founder of Hunger Inc. Hospitality, that runs the Mumbai restaurants, tested positive for Covid-19 in the USA on March 18, and was being treated in New Jersey. Cardoz had travelled from Mumbai to New York through Frankfurt, Germany.
