UN yet to agree on common definition of terrorism

  • The United Nations member states have failed themselves by continuing to procrastinate on concluding a comprehensive convention against international terrorism, India has said.
  • The global body has neither agreed on a common definition of terrorism nor crafted a well-coordinated policy to tackle the global scourge and dismantle its enabling networks.
  • India proposed a draft document on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) at the UN in 1986 but it has not been implemented yet as there is no unanimity on the definition of terrorism among the member states.

Lucknow IPL team named Lucknow Super Giants

  • The Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League will be called Lucknow Super Giants after its owners announced the name chosen by its fans.
  • Last year, the franchise was purchased by the SanjivGoenka-owned of the RPSG group for an amount of Rs 7090 Crores.
  • The other new team to enter the competition is from Ahmedabad who were bought by the Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) for Rs 5635 Crores.

China sends aircrafts towards Taiwan zone

  • China’s Air Force sent 52 aircraft towards Taiwan in its latest show of force aimed at the island, prompting jets to be scrambled in response.
  • The first group included 34 J-16 fighters jets, four electronic warfare planes and one H-6 bomber, while recently there were 10 J-16s, two H-6 bombers and one Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft.
  • China has in the past sent aircraft into Taiwan’s ADIZas a show of force or signalling often coinciding with political developments or military exercises.

Legendary footballer SubhasBhowmick passes away

  • SubhasBhowmick, one of Indian football’s most vibrant personalities, passed away in Kolkata. He was 71.
  • He prominently figured in the Indian team that won the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games bronze. He was also part of the Indian team that jointly won the PestaSukan Cup with South Vietnam in Singapore in 1971.
  • He made an equally big impact as coach, winning the country’s top tournament — the I-League — twice with East Bengal and once with Goan giant Churchill Brothers.

Ayesha Malik sworn in as first woman judge of Supreme Court

  • Justice Ayesha Malik took oath as the first woman judge of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, in what can be described as a watershed moment in the judicial history of the country.
  • Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed administered the oath to 55-year-old Justice Malik in a ceremony held at the ceremonial hall of the Supreme Court.
  • The judicial commission of Pakistan earlier this month approved her with a narrow majority of five to four when her name was brought up for the second time for consideration.
