Railway Board to be revamped

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the restructuring of the Railway Board, including reduction in the Board strength as well as merger of the different cadres into a central service called the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS).
  • The government said this would help end “departmentalism”, while ensuring smooth working of the Railways.
  • The Board now consists of eight members, including the Chairman, from different service departments such as traffic, civil, mechanical, electrical and signal & telecom.

Indian women athletes show higher health deficiencies and health risks

  • Research in India has shown that an alarming number of Indian athletes miss their periods and are deficient in key minerals, putting them at major risk of suffering career-threatening injuries as well as long-term health consequences, including osteoporosis.
  • Indian women athletes showed higher deficiencies and health risks when compared to their counterparts worldwide. This condition is called Female Athlete Triad syndrome.
  • The potential injuries because of Female Athlete Triad include ACL damage, stress fractures, back and knee injuries in wrestling, and shoulder injuries in case of a boxer.

Self service petrol pumps to be set up in Andhra Pradesh

  • For the first time in Andhra Pradesh, the HPCL is in the process of installing two self-dispensing units, which will minimise the need for human interface in the filling of fuel.
  • HPCL customers can use their credit/debit card to transact through the Integrated Payment Solution (camera enabled Point of Sale).
  • In future, the HPCL fuel recharge app may also be enabled for use as a prepaid card for transacting at the self-service dispensing units.

Travis Kalanick to leave Uber board

  • Former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is resigning from the board of directors, severing ties with the ride-hailing company that he co-founded a decade ago.
  • Kalanick had recently sold more than $2.5 billion worth of stock in the company, or more than 90% of his holdings.

Rohtang tunnel named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • The Centre has decided to name the Rohtang passageway 'Atal Tunnel' after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had laid its foundation stone in 2003.
  • The state cabinet in its meeting on August 20 last year had proposed naming the tunnel after the former PM and thereafter passed a resolution for the Union government's approval.
  • The tunnel connects Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, and Manali with Leh, bisecting Pir Panjal ranges.
