India bans 43 Chinese apps

  • The ministry of electronic and information technology (Meity) has blocked 43 mobile apps including Alibaba Workbench, AliExpress, for engaging in activities prejudicial to India's sovereignty, integrity, defence, security, and public order.
  • Earlier on June 29, the government had blocked access to 59 Chinese apps, including hugely popular TikTok and UC Browser and on September 2, another 118 apps comprising PUBG Mobile Nordic Map, Livik, PUBG Mobile Lite, WeChat Work, Baidu, Tencent Weiyun among others were banned under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
  • This is the third such list that the government has issued in which no direct mention has been made to China or the app’s origins, but the list still exclusively consists of Chinese mobile apps.

Scotland becomes first country to make sanitary products free

  • Scotland has become the world’s first country to provide free and universal access to sanitary products for women of all age groups, after the Scottish parliament unanimously passed a legislation.
  • Under the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act, the Scottish government will introduce a nationwide program which will place a legal duty on all local authorities to make feminine hygiene products such as tampons and pads freely available for those who need them.
  • The measure will make sanitary pads and tampons freely available at nearly all public places including community centres, youth clubs, and pharmacies. Schools, colleges, and universities will also be mandated to make feminine hygiene products accessible for students.

John Kelly appointed as special envoy for climate by Biden

  • President-elect Joe Biden has announced the name of former Secretary of State John Kerry to the role of Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
  • In this capacity, Kerry will be the first member of the White House National Security Council to focus exclusively on the threat of climate change.
  • Kerry has also pledged to support President-elect Biden in his promised initiative to re-join the Paris Climate Accord following President Trump's executive order to remove the U.S. from the pact.

Greg Barclay elected ICC chairman

  • Greg Barclay has been named the new independent chair of the International Cricket Council, beating Imran Khwaja to succeed Shashank Manohar.
  • The former New Zealand Cricket boss needed a two-thirds majority of the 16-person ICC board and received the all-important 11th vote from Cricket South Africa. Khwaja had been the interim chairman since Manohar stepped down in July.
  • Barclay, an Auckland-based commercial lawyer, has been a director of NZC since 2012. He is currently serves as NZC's representative on the board of the ICC but will step down from the position to lead the world body in an independent capacity.
  • Barclay was a director of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015 and is a former board member and chairman of the Northern Districts Cricket Association.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passes away

  • Senior Congress leader and party treasurer Ahmed Patel passed away at a Delhi hospital due to multiple organ failure more than a month after he was tested positive for COVID-19. He was 71.
  • Ahmed Patel has for long been the power centre in Congress being party president Sonia Gandhi's political secretary.
  • He had also earlier worked as Parliamentary Secretary for her husband Rajiv Gandhi in 1985. He was appointed the treasurer of the party in 2018 after the long time treasurer Motilal Vohra bowed out.
  • An eight-time parliamentarian, Ahmed Patel served three terms in the Lok Sabha and five terms in the Rajya Sabha.  He has always been the party's trouble-shooter and was the key leader to co-ordinate between Congress and other parties.
