PM launches Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and Release of Operational Guidelines in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi.
  • PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission will be one of the largest pan-India schemes for strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country. It will be in addition to the National Health Mission.
  • The objective of PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission is to fill critical gaps in public health infrastructure, especially in critical care facilities and primary care in both urban and rural areas.

Netherlands aims to have Naval Liaison Officer in India

  • Netherlands is interested in posting a Liaison Officer (LO) at the Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre for Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) for Maritime Domain Awareness and information sharing.
  • It has also stressed on the need for greater cooperation and interoperability between like-minded countries in tackling maritime threats.
  • Among European counties, France and U.K. have a LO at the IFC-IOR in addition to Australia, Japan, Singapore and U.S.

‘Friends’ actor James Tyler passes away

  • Actor James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther in the hit TV sitcom 'Friends' has died aged 59.
  • Tyler may not have had the same screen time as the six other actors on 'Friends', but he made his character Gunther memorable.
  • In the show, Gunther worked as a waiter and manager of the coffee house, Central Perk.Tyler was also part of the reunion special that aired in May this year.

Law to protect religious structures comes into effect in Karnataka

  • The Karnataka Religious Structures (Protection) Act, which was passed in the state assembly in September, has come into effect following the assent of Governor.
  • The Karnataka Religious Structures (Protection) Bill, 2021 was introduced in the assembly by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai with the stated purpose of “protection of religious constructions on a public place constructed before the date of commencement of this Act, in order to protect communal harmony and not hurt the religious sentiments of the public.”
  • The bill defines an illegal religious structure as a “temple, church, mosque, gurudwara, Bodh vihar, Majaretc, constructed on a public place without authority of law”.

Government officials detained in Sudan

  • Sudan’s interim prime minister and a number of senior government officials were arrested under a military coup.
  • The country’s main pro-democracy group and the largest political party urged people in separate appeals to take to the streets to counter the apparent military coup.
  • A takeover by the military would be a major setback for Sudan, which has grappled with a transition to democracy since long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was toppled by mass protests two years ago.
