Typhoon In-Fa makes landfall in China

  • Chinese commercial hub Shanghai and neighbouring coastal regions cancelled all flights, slowed or suspended subway trains and shuttered businesses as Typhoon In-fa made landfall.
  • The typhoon earlier dumped rain on Taiwan and knocked down tree branches but no deaths or injuries were reported. It was packing sustained winds of 155 kilometers.
  • Chinese authorities have issued a level III alert -- the third-highest -- for the storm, while more than 100 trains travelling through the region have been cancelled.

World’s cleanest nuclear reactor opened in China

  • Scientists of the Chinese government have unveiled plans for an experimental nuclear reactor that does not require water for cooling.
  • This reactor will run on liquid thorium instead of uranium and is expected to be safer than the traditional reactors.
  • The molten-salt nuclear reactor, which runs on liquid thorium rather than uranium, is expected to be safer than traditional reactors because the molten salt cools and solidifies quickly when exposed to the air.

Brazil’s Covaxin clinical trials suspended

  • Brazil has suspended the clinical studies of Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin following termination of the company's agreement with its partner.
  • Bharat Biotech has announced cancellation of the MoU it signed with PrecisaMedicaments’ and Envixia Pharmaceuticals LL.C for its COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin for the Brazilian market.
  • The termination of the pact comes after the deal with the Brazilian government for supply of 20 million doses of the vaccine landed in controversy and attracted investigation by authorities in that country.
  • Precisa Medicamentos was Bharat Biotechs partner in Brazil, providing assistance, guidance and support with regulatory submissions, licensure, distribution, insurance and conduct of phase III clinical trials, among others.

World’s first 3D printed Steel bridge inaugurated in Amsterdam

  • World’s first 3D-printed steel bridge was opened to the public in Amsterdam earlier this month. It was developed by MX3D, a Dutch robotics company, in collaboration with a consortium of experts.
  • After four years in development, the bridge was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. It was installed over one of the oldest canals in Amsterdam’s city centre – the OudezijdsAchterburgwal.
  • The steel structure will be a ‘living laboratory’ that will capture and transmit data on its health in real-time to show how it changes over its lifespan.
  • The sensors attached to the structure will gather data on air quality, temperature, strain, displacement and vibration.

MirabaiChanu wins India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics

  • India's star weightlifter MirabaiChanu created history as she overcame her Rio heartbreak to become the first Indian weightlifter to win the silver medal at the Olympic Games.
  • Chanu also became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the Women's 49kg category.
  • China's ZhihuiHou won the gold medal in the women's 49-kg weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics, lifting a total of 210 kg, while Indonesia's Windy CantikaAisah won the bronze medal.
  • Chanu managed to lift a total of 202 kg in the women’s 49kg category to become the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.
