Shooting in Texas school

  • The 18-year-old suspect had a handgun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and high-capacity magazines.
  • Nearly 500 pupils are enrolled in the predominantly Hispanic school. The incident is the latest bout of gun-fueled mass murder in the United States.

Yasin Malik gets life imprisonment in terror funding case

  • A Delhi court has sentenced Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik to life term in a terror funding case.
  • Malik had earlier pleaded guilty to all charges, including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
  • The case is related to alleged terrorism and secessionist activities that took place in the Kashmir valley in 2017.

  • Dyalchand along with Ghana’s James Kofi Annan and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai among the eight nominees for the prestigious WCP ‘Child Rights Hero of the Decade’ award.

  • Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as Finance Minister of the debt-ridden country by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
  • The five-time Prime Minister was re-appointed to the job on May 12 following the political circus precipitated by the unprecedented economic crisis in the island’s history.
  • He replaced Mahinda Rajapaksa who resigned to make way for his brother’s plan to appoint an all-party interim government to handle the economic crisis.

Baljeet Kaur becomes first Indian to scale four 8,000 plus peaks within a month

  • Baljeet Kaur has become the first Indian mountaineer to scale four 8,000-metre peaks in less than a month.
  • Kaur scaled Mt Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest peak with her guide Mingma Sherpa. It was Kaur’s fourth successful climb this spring season.
  • Baljeet and Mingma submitted Mt Annapurna I (8,091-metre) on April 28, Mt Kanchenjunga (8,586-metre) on May 12. On May 21, they scaled Mt Everest (8,849 metre).
