Netanyahu becomes firstserving Israeli prime minister to face criminal charges

  • The long-awaited corruption trial of Benjamin Netanyahu is due to open in Jerusalem, where he will become the first serving Israeli prime minister to face criminal prosecution.
  • Netanyahu has been charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases. He is accused of accepting expensive gifts, such as cartons of champagne and cigars, from wealthy friends and offering favours to media moguls in exchange for favourable news coverage of him and his family.
  • In the most serious case, he is accused of promoting legislation that delivered hundreds of millions of dollars of profits to the owner of a major telecom company while wielding behind-the-scenes editorial influence over the firm's popular news website.

ITC plans to acquire Sunrise foods

  • The ITC Limited has entered into a Share Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire 100% of the equity share capital of Sunrise Foods Private Ltd (SFPL), which is into spices under the trademark ‘Sunrise’ for an unspecified amount.
  • Sunrise is a market leader in eastern India in the spices category with a legacy of over 70 years. Finalisation of the SPA along with related processes was completed during the lockdown.
  • The proposed acquisition will augment the product portfolio and is aligned to ITC’s aspiration to significantly scale up its Spices business and expand its footprint across the country.

Personal details leak on Dark web

  • A leak of nearly 2.9 crore job-seekers’ details was discovered by Cyble Inc., a U.S.-based cyber intelligence firm. Along with this, a small set of Aadhar card details were also posted for free of cost.
  • Cyble researchers said the Aadhaar cards and the job seekers’ details were posted by different entities, both with a different level of reputation on the dark net.
  • The Aadhaar leak actor also published a second leak whereby they dropped details of 18 lakh residents of Madhya Pradesh for free on May 19. State and Central cybercrime agencies have also initiated their own investigations into the matter.

Pollution level decreases in many Indian cities due to lockdown

  • Due to the COVID-19-related lockdown, global CO2 emissions in 2020 have dropped to levels last seen in 2006. Particulate matter pollution levels in select Indian cities exhibit a similar decline.
  • The data chart shows the increase or decrease in visits and length of stay at places in India compared to a baseline value.
  • The chart uses anonymised location data from phones collated by Google. It also shows the cumulative COVID-19 cases in India.
  • Lately, due to relaxations, visits to grocery & pharmacy stores, workplaces and transit stations have increased significantly.

Hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr passes away

  • Hockey legend and winner of three Olympic gold medals, Balbir Singh Sr died at the age of 95 at a hospital in Chandigarh.
  • Balbir Singh, who captained India at the 1956 Olympic Games and was also the manager of the 1975 World Cup-winning team.
  • Balbir Singh was the first hockey player to be awarded the Padma Shri in 1957. In 1977, he came up with his autobiography 'The Golden Hat Trick: My Hockey Days'.
  • His world record for most goals (five) scored by an individual in a men's hockey final of the Olympics still remains unbeaten.
