Classical singer Rajan Mishra dies

  • Classical singer Rajan Mishra has died due to Covid-19 in Delhi. He was admitted to Delhi’s St Stephen Hospital after he developed heart complications along with Covid-19.
  • Belonging to the Benaras gharana, Pandit Rajan Mishra, along with brother Sajan Mishra have performed for both Indian and global audiences for decades now.
  • The brothers were renowned vocalists in the khyal style of Indian classical singing. They have been honoured by the Padma Bhushan award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and the Gandharva National award in their meritorious career.

Serving Supreme court judge MM Shantanagoudar dies

  • Supreme Court judge Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar died at a private hospital in Gurgaon. He was 62.
  • Justice Shantanagoudar was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2017. He would have remained in office till May 5, 2023.
  • He was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court on May 12, 2003, and became a permanent judge in the court in September 2004.
  • Later, Justice Shantanagoudar was transferred to the Kerala High Court, where he assumed charge as the acting chief justice on August 1, 2016.

Justice NV Ramana sworn-in as the Chief Justice of India

  • Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • Chief Justice Ramana hails from Ponnavaram Village, Krishna District in Andhra Pradesh. Justice Ramana will serve as the CJI for a year and four months till August 26, 2022. He is the second CJI from the state of Andhra Pradesh.
  • He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 27, 2000. He functioned as Acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013.

Madhya Pradesh MLA Kalavati Bhuria passes away

  • Kalawati Bhuria, a Congress MLA in Madhya Pradesh, passed away in Indore while undergoing treatment for coronavirus. She was 49.
  • Kalawati represented Jobat assembly constituency in Alirajpur district. She was also a four-time district panchayat president from the adjoining Jhabua district.
  • Kalawati was former Union Minister Kantilal Bhuria's niece. She had become a legislator after winning the Jobat seat in 2018.

Mexican President pushes for controversial reforestation plans

  • Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made a strong push for his tree-planting program’ expansion into Central America as a way to stem migration.
  • López Obrador claims the program can help prevent farmers from leaving their land and migrating to the United States.
  • The program has already planted 700,000 trees in Mexico, where it pays 450,000 Mexican farmers a stipend of about $225 per month to tend the saplings.
  • That is popular among farmer in dry towns in Yucatan state, where highly seasonal rainfall makes the tree program a vital stopgap for farmers.
