North Korea carries out ballistic missile launch

  • North Korea is banned from developing ballistic missiles under United Nations Security Council resolutions.
  • Japan lodged a formal protest about the launches through its embassy in China. The missile launch took place only days after North Korea fired suspected cruise missiles.

Dubai deputy ruler Sheikh Hamdan dies

  • Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai and the finance minister of the United Arab Emirates, has passed away. He was 75.
  • Sheikh Hamdan served as deputy leader of Dubai under his brother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the hereditary ruler of the city-state who also serves as prime minister and vice president of the UAE.
  • He led Emirati delegations to the International Monetary Fund and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund for international development.

Tree climbing Kangaroo species discovered

  • Australian researchers reported finding an extinct kangaroo species that once roamed the continent some 40,000 years ago. Its defining feature of climbing trees were identified through strongly curved claws, hands capable of grasping, and strong forelimbs and hindlimbs.
  • The specimens studied were found in the Nullarbor Plain Thylacoleo Caves and Mammoth Cave in the western part of Australia.
  • Researchers had to go through the process of identifying and describing the details of each bone in the discovered remains. Their efforts reveal that the arboreal macropods belong to a now-extinct species of wallaby.

First crude oil cargo from Guyana to reach Mundra port

  • The first cargo from new oil producer Guyana to India has departed this month from a production facility off the South American nation's coast.
  • Since Guyana began exporting crude in early 2020, its oil has flowed mainly to the United States, China, Panama and the Caribbean.
  • India was a prominent importer of Venezuelan oil, but tight U.S. sanctions on the South American country have since 2019 limited the volume India can buy, if it is even allowed.
  • Besides Russia, North American producers Canada, the United States and Mexico have gained market share by selling heavy crude grades to India.
