India bans export of key Malaria drug

  • The Indian government said that it is banning the export of hydroxychloroquine and formulations made from the medication, as experts test the efficacy of the drug in helping treat patients infected with Covid-19.
  • There are currently no approved treatments, or preventive vaccines for Covid-19, the highly contagious and deadly respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus.
  • Hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug, is among the medications that are being tested, as a potential treatment for patients with the disease.

Karnataka HC makes use of virtual court facility

  • The Karnataka High Court turned the concept of virtual court into reality by digitally reaching out to an advocate in a remote location, straight from the court hall, for live hearing of arguments in a case.
  • For the first time, digital connectivity was used not for hearing a case live from a court hall but also to connect to an advocate in a remote location.
  • In view of restrictions imposed on entry to the court complexes due to COVID-19, the High Court had notified temporary availability of virtual court facility to enable the advocates and litigants, who appear in person, to argue cases of extreme urgency through digital mode.

India to observe lockdown for next 21 days

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the country would be imposing a "total ban" on Indians venturing outside their homes to combat the spread of coronavirus.
  • He said the curfew would be enforced for the next 21 days, as health experts had advised this was the most important period to counteract the spread of the coronavirus.
  • The prime minister said the supply of essential goods will be maintained and his government will be working to reduce the difficulties of the poor.

Tokyo Olympics postponed by one year

  • The 2020 Tokyo Olympicshave been postponed to no later than the summer of 2021 because of the coronaviruspandemic sweeping the globe, the International Olympic Committee has announced.
  • The Olympics, which has experienced boycotts, terrorist attacks and protests, but has been held every four years since 1948, would be the highest-profile event affected by the virus that has killed thousands and closed sports competitions worldwide.
  • Training has become impossible for many athletes and exposes them to the risk of contracting or spreading the disease. Competitions and qualifiers have been scrapped, while international travel is severely limited.

Albert Uderzo, co-creator of Asterix comics passes away

  • Italian-born artist, illustrator, and Asterix co-founder Albert Uderzo has died at the age of 92.
  • Uderzo created the comic series Asterix in 1959 with writer Rene Goscinny, and first published it in the French-Belgian comics magazine Pilote. 
  • The series was a massive hit with translations in several languages. After Goscinny's death in 1977, Uderzo continued writing and illustrating the series alone, till he retired in 2011.
