K Govindaraj re-elected as president of Basketball Federation of India

  • K Govindaraj was unanimously re-elected as President of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) at its annual general-body meeting held in Bengaluru, New Delhi. Besides him, Chander Mukhi Sharma was re-elected secretary-general of BFI.
  • BFI is the governing and controlling body of Basketball sport in India. It is responsible for development and promotion of basketball at all levels.
  • It manages all t national level basketball sports event in India. It is involved in organizing training camps and national tournaments.
  • It also selects and prepare Indian teams for both men and women international competitions in various age categories.
  • Note: Young Cagers is also another name of National basketball team of India.

Infosys inks pact with Roland-Garros to provide technology solution for French Open

  • Indian IT giant Infosys has signed three-year (2019 to 2021) partnership agreement with Roland-Garros to provide technology solution for French Open tennis tournament, one of the four grand slam of tennis.
  • The pact is aimed at enriching sport of tennis by providing fans, players and coaches with new experience.
  • It will be leveraging Infosys’ expertise in digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data and analytics, mobility, virtual and augmented reality.
  • Both Infosys and Roland-Garros will work on several new digitally-enabled experiences including re-imagined fan experience powered by data and analytics.
  • It will enable tennis fans to follow live scores, feel pulse of live matches, delve deeper into match analytics and understand factor that influenced outcome of the match.

Fitch cuts India’s GDP growth forecast for FY20 to 6.8%

  • Fitch Ratings in its latest Global Economic Outlook (GEO) has cut India’s economic growth forecast for financial year FY20 to 6.8% from its previous estimate of 7%.
  • It also has cut growth forecasts for FY20 and FY21 to 7% from earlier 7.3%  and 7.1%  from 7.3% respectively.
  • The growth projections are weaker than expected momentum in the economy. This also comes after RBI has adopted more dovish monetary policy stance and cut interest rates by 0.25% in February 2019 bimonthly monetary.

Kazakhstan’s capital officially named as Nursultan

  • Kazakhstan has officially renamed its capital Astana as Nursultan to honour outgoing leader and President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Previously Astana was known as Tselinograd, Akmola and Akmolinsk.
  • The renaming was announced after Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was sworn-in as President of this Central Asian Country.
  • it comes after President Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down from office and holding it for more than three decades since Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991 after collapse of Soviet Union.
  • Under this leadership Kazakhstan had undergone major transformation, developed its huge energy reserves and boosted its international influence.
  • Even after demitting from office, Nazarbayev will still continue to enjoy significant powers and clout in the country due to his Constitutional status as “Leader of the Nation” which makes him life-time chief of country’s security council and head of ruling Nur Otan party.
